Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Washington- (PanOrient News) The U.S. State Department on Monday condemnd what it called "the incursions of Syrian forces into Lebanese territory as violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty."

Replying to a question on news reports that the Syrian army entered Lebanon, the U.S State Department spokeperson said, "Over the course of the last few weeks, it appears that Syrian forces have entered Lebanese territory. We condemn these and reiterate our view that Lebanon and Syria should demarcate their entire border as soon as possible in accordance with UNSC Resolutions 1680 and 1701."

We are also deeply concerned by indications that Syrian dissidents may have been captured and possibly killed during operations near the border, and we continue to urge the Lebanese government to uphold its international obligations and protect the security and human rights of all those in Lebanon, including those fleeing the violence and brutality of the Assad regime, the official said.

"We reaffirm our commitment to UNSC Resolution 1559, which calls for, “the strict respect of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity, and political independence of Lebanon under the sole and exclusive authority of the Government of Lebanon throughout Lebanon.” UNSC Resolution 1559 is fundamental to bringing about long-term stability in Lebanon, and we call on all regional actors to respect its terms, the U.S. State Department official said.
