Japan Hits Iran with More Sanctions “to Promote International Peace”

List of Entities, Individuals and Banks Sanctioned
Tokyo- (PanOrient News) The Japanese government today hit Iran with additional sanctions including asset freeze on 106 entities based in Iran, UAE and 9 other countries, as well as financial restrictions against Iranian banks, and said the aim of these sanctions is "to contribute to worldwide efforts for international peace."
A statement by the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said these new sanctions are based on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions 1737, 1747, 1803 and 1929 in connection with Iranian nuclear activities, and according to Japan’s Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act.
The Cabinet of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda approved the additional sanctions saying "In light of the current situation over the Iranian nuclear issue, such as the adoption of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors' Resolution (issued on November 18, 2011) that expressed deep and increasing concerns regarding the outstanding issues of Iran's nuclear program, the statement said.
The new sanctions were itemized into "Asset Freeze" of 106 entities (in Iran, UAE, Switzerland, Isle of Man, Cypress, Malta, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Germany) and 1 individual (details in Annex 1 below) These entities could allegedly "contribute to Iran's proliferation-sensitive activities or the development of nuclear weapon delivery systems" the statement noted.
The second item was "Termination of Correspondent Banking Relationships with Designated Banks through Asset Freeze."
Three Iranian banks (Annex 2) were targeted - in effect, correspondent banking relationships have been halted, “because they could contribute to Iran's proliferation-sensitive activities or the development of nuclear weapon delivery systems" the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry statement mentions the probability of additional safeguards to further strengthen existing measures in order to protect their financial sectors from money laundering and the financing of terrorism (ML/FT) risks emanating from Iran.
It noted that the government of Japan advises financial institutions to scrutinize customer identifications, to file reports with the authorities upon detection of any suspicious transactions, and to notify authorities of foreign exchange transactions as required by the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds.
Iran says that Japan and its Western allies led by Washington, accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program but they have never presented any corroborative evidence to substantiate their allegations. Iran denies the charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
Iranian leaders stress that their country has always pursued a civilian path to provide energy to the growing Iranian population as their fossil fuel would eventually run dry.
