Kan in Kichijoji

Tokyo -- Residents of Japanese cities may experience a new kind of peace as they wake up tomorrow without the campaign shouts coming over the loudspeakers of the political soundtrucks.

Today was the last day of campaigning ahead of the 2010 House of Councillors elections.

Tomorrow Japanese voters will go to the polls to make a judgment on ten months of DPJ rule.

Most analysts are now predicting that it will be a tough evening for Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

No one is suggesting that the DPJ will gain the 60 seats it would need to form a one-party majority, and many doubt that Kan will achieve his stated goal of 54 seats.

Should the DPJ fall below 50 seats, however, this could spell real trouble for the prime minister looking forward.
