Small Parties Fight for Survival

Tokyo -- While the main plot of today's House of Councillors election concerns the question of whether or not Naoto Kan's DPJ can meet its goal of gaining 54 seats or more, many of Japan's smaller parties are fighting for their very survival.

Since late 2009, a relatively large number of small parties have arisen to contest these elections. It is likely that after the elections are concluded, a number of these smaller parties will merge with like-minded counterparts.
