Tuesday, May 8, 2012

Tokyo- (PanOrient News) Dr. Burhan Ghalioun, president of the Syrian National Council, will visit Japan for two days from Thursday May 10, Japanese sources said.

Ghalioun, who is calling to topple the regime of Syria President Bashar Assad, may hold meetings with Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshihiko Noda, and Foreign Minister, Koichi Genba during the visit, sources told PanOrient News.

The Middle East Institute will host a lecture for Dr. Ghalioun on Friday at which he will talk about the situation in Syria.

The Japanese government has imposed various sanctions against the Syrian government and its president in response to the "oppression they have been committing against civilians". The Japan embassy in Syria also moved its operation to Amman last month, and Japan pledged assistance of about three million USD for the Syrian refugees and for emergency assistance for other Syrians affected by the violence in the country.

Syrian National Council (SNC) consists of 310 members shared by different Syrian opposition groups "to serve as a political umbrella for the Syrian Revolution in the international arena and support the just cause of the Syrian people, who yearn to be liberated from tyranny and create a civil democratic state".
