Akihisa Nagashima: Japan Should Ease Arms Export Rules

Tokyo -- Confirming the analysis offered by PanOrient News only yesterday, Parliamentary Defense Secretary Akihisa Nagashima today declared himself in favor of easing the rules for Japan to export weapons systems to other countries.

"Given tighter budgetary conditions, co-development [of weapons systems] is an international trend," Nagashima reportedly said.

As part of co-development, Nagashima acknowledges that looser arms export rules will be required.

Nagashima's voice is an important one, but he is very much a spokesman for the hawkish, pro-Washington wing of the DPJ, and not necessarily the mainstream of the party.

At least once or twice in the recent past his pronouncements about government policy have proven to represent his personal opinions rather than the official opinion.

In this case, however, there are signs that the DPJ is indeed moving in the direction that he is suggesting.
