Dispatch of Election Observers to the Solomon Islands

The text of the official statement reads as follows:
1. Japan will send Election Observers to support free and fair conduct of the general election in the Solomon Islands scheduled on Aug. 4 (Wed). The 7-person mission headed by Mr. Akira Iwanade, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim in the Solomon Islands, will consist of Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials, overseas Embassy officials, and a expert in the academic sector. Also, to support the preparation and implementation of the election, Japan has decided to extend financial assistance of approximately 100,000 US dollars (approximately 9.40 million yen) through the Japan-United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Partnership Fund.
2. This general election is an important election so that democracy becomes a permanent fixture with this country, where potential ethnic conflicts still remain. Japan's Election Observers will work as members of the United Nations Election Observers organized by the UNDP, upon the request of the Government of the Solomon Islands. Besides Japan, Australia and New Zealand will also participate in the said UN mission.
3. Through the dispatch of Election Observers and financial assistance decided this time, Japan will actively contribute to stability and establishment of democracy in the Solomon Islands.
