City Government Bans 'Unpleasant' Beards

Tokyo -- The city government of Isesaki in Gunma Prefecture on Wednesday banned male employees from wearing beards, according to Kyodo News.

The relevant city government in-house notice explains, "Some citizens find bearded men unpleasant, so beards are banned."

A few complaints were apparently received from citizens in regard to city employees who showed up to work after Golden Week unshaven.

The Isesaki government justified its order on the notion that public servants must maintain decorum.

However, Kyodo News quoted an unnamed official at the Environment Ministry who said that it is "hard to say" whether or not beards have anything to do with maintaining decorum.

We must also presume that few if any Muslims are working in Isezaki city offices.
