Japan’s Motor Vehicle and Component Manufacturers Enjoy Continued Growth in 2013

Tokyo-(PanOrient News) Japanese motor vehicle and component manufacturers registered 13% growth in trade in 2013, data showed. Combined exports and imports of passenger vehicles, trucks and components grew to $150.8 billion (¥15.7 trillion), according to statistics published by the Customs and Tariffs Bureau of Japan's Ministry of Finance.

Of the total, exports grew to $133.8 billion (¥13.9 trillion) against $17.2 billion (¥1.8 billion) in imports, giving Japan a net surplus of $118.1 billion (¥12.1 trillion), up from $96.3 billion (¥10.0 trillion) in 2012.
Unchanged from the past, the U.S. was the leading export market at $36.1 billion (¥3.7 trillion), up 20% from 2012.

Powered by Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes, imports from Germany, the only country to have registered an automotive trade surplus with Japan, rose to a record $6.5 billion (¥674.3 billion) of which 86% or $5.6 billion (¥578.3 billion) were cars.

Germany's net surplus: $4.1 billion (¥421.9 billion).

On a unit basis, Japan exported 5,843,807 vehicles including 1,740,928 units to the U.S., 839,938 to Asia, 663,232 to the Middle East, and 390,469 to Europe, and

Imports, mostly from Europe, rose 3% to 363,941 units.
