Tokyo -- Although the SDP is a very small party now consisting of only 10 lawmakers, even among that small group the divisions have become quite pronounced, and the future leadership of Mizuho Fukushima is very much in doubt.

Many in the party are demanding that Fukushima and the other party executives step down for both the poor performance of the SDP in the House of Councillors election as well as their inability to keep Kiyomi Tsujimoto within the party.

One of the leaders of the dissidents is Kantoku Teruya, the senior Okinawan lawmaker, who seems mystified that Tsujimoto would have come to believe that she must leave the party.

Seiji Mataichi, himself one of the party leaders, has suggested that he and his colleagues in the party leadership should step down.

SDP Leader Mizuho Fukushima, however, signaled today that she has not yet been convinced.

"All our party members and our supporters have no choice but to overcome the crisis of the SDP. I will actively work on behalf of all of us," Fukushima said.
