Wednesday, September 21, 2011
Tokyo- (PanOrient News) Japan and Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in water treatment operations in the Middle East country, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) said Tuesday.
METI said it intends to create an environment that will enable Japanese companies to enter business in Saudi Arabia. It also will help companies win water infrastructure projects being planned in cities around the country.
Tadahiro Matsushita, METI senior vice minister, visited Saudi Arabia from Saturday through Monday to sign the memorandum with the country's Ministry of Water and Electricity. The memorandum includes technological cooperation on building water and sewage systems, as well as holding regular conferences to develop human resources and exchange information on the matter.
It also covers comprehensive cooperation in management of water and sewerage, including desalination of seawater, measures against water leaks and treatment of sewage.
The Japanese and Saudi governments have been holding regular talks on such infrastructure building for water business since 2010.
A Japanese consortium is established for the projects. The consortium includes the City of Yokohama, plant engineering company JGC Corp. and Innovation Network Corp. of Japan, a government-affiliated fund.
Japan intends to promote the export of its infrastructure building technology and know-how as one of the pillars of its economic growth strategy, and has been proactively seeking to obtain orders from Saudi Arabia for a packaged project, which includes the construction of a water treatment facility, its operation and maintenance, according to METI.
