Moroccan Ambassador to Tokyo Talks to PanOrient News

TOKYO: (PanOrient News) The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Tokyo, Mr. Rashad Bouhlal, has confirmed exclusively to PanOrient News that an online conference held to discuss proposals for settling the dispute over the Western Sahara territory is an endorsement of plans proposed by the Kingdom.

“The wide international support to the 'Ministerial Conference in Support of the Autonomy Initiative', held online at the invitation of the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, is a new confirmation on the efficacy and pragmatism of the autonomy initiative, which Morocco presented in 2007,” Mr. Bouhlal said.

“It is a serious, viable and credible initiative, and clearly constitutes a realistic political process and constructive solution that has already taken its course," the ambassador added.

Ambassador Rashad Bouhlal indicated that the new development model for the southern regions constitutes a lever for development in the region, which has become an incubator for diversity at the geographical, economic and cultural levels, as was confirmed by the conference participants, who came from 40 countries, of which 27 were represented at the ministerial level.

At the invitation of the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States, the Ministerial Conference in support of the Autonomy Initiative under Morocco’s sovereignty was held virtually on January 15.

A proclamation by the United States on December 10, 2020, titled “Recognizing the Sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over Western Sahara,” reaffirmed support for Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory.

Commenting on the importance of the American declaration recognizing Morocco's sovereignty, Mr. Bouhlal affirmed that "this declaration was not a coincidence, but rather the result of hard work and the insightful vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as various international players, especially successive American administrations, and the United Nations persevered at affirming their firm support for the autonomy initiative as a realistic solution to end the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara."

The Moroccan ambassador also said "There is no doubt that the international dynamic support of the Moroccan approach has seen important developments during the last year, through the decision of more than 20 countries to open consular representations in the southern provinces of the Kingdom. That culminated in the American recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara. It also included a set of decisions, the most important of which is the opening of an American consulate in the city of Dakhla, and support for the proposal for autonomy as the sole basis for a concrete solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.”(PanOrient News)
