YANGON: As Myanmar embarked on the first phase of its 2025 Multiparty Democracy General Elections on Sunday, a surge of hope rippled across the nation. Many see this turning point as a chance for Myanmar to shine in the region, drawing on its rich resources and key location.

Arab sources in Yangon told PanOrient News that the Muslim business community and investors are rallying behind these elections, hopeful that political progress will open the door to fresh economic opportunities.

Meanwhile, 139 international election observers and diplomats are on the ground, watchful and resolute in their mission to protect the integrity and peace of the voting process.

Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the country’s leader, voted in the political capital, Naypyidaw, on Sunday, telling local reporters, "We guarantee that this will be a free and fair [election].”

The second and third phases of voting, including casting in Rakhine State, are set for January 11 and 25. Final results are expected by the end of January.

Bringing this year’s elections to life has tested organizers at every turn.

International organizations note that fierce fighting still rages in some remote corners of the country.

Still, the State Security and Peace Commission plans to hold elections in 265 townships, which cover 80 percent of the country’s 330 townships. The interim president, reportedly, instructed security forces to reclaim areas under rebel control to allow by-elections to be held there by mid-2026.

Because of the conflicts, the Union Election Commission (UEC) is holding the elections in three phases: 102 townships on December 28, 100 on January 11, and 63 on January 25. The goal is to finish all three phases within a month.

Despite threats from non-state armed groups, the UEC has forged ahead, intent on ensuring as many citizens as possible can have their voices count at the polls.(PanOrient News)
